The gardens that now form part of the 49% green spaces of Edinburgh – one of the largest in the UK – used to be a shallow swamp. In the 16th century it was flooded to act as a barrier from invading armies to protect the Castle district. When the the Old town could not cope an longer with the increase of population, that stinking tepid water was drained to give way to these beautiful gardens.
There have been repeated plans to build up the area but fortunately they have always been refused. These spacious gardens in the heart of the city provide the oxigen as well as the airy feeling that make Edinburgh stand out so much.
